GUEST,Stewart Lyr Add: Easter Rabbit - how a hen became a hare (10) Easter Rabbit - how a hen became a hare 28 Mar 02

Here's an Easter song I learned from from my friend Paddy Graber in Vancouver, B.C.

EASTER RABBIT: THE HEN WHO BECAME A HARE
By Paddy Graber

"When my children were quite small, kindergarten or grade one, Eileen and Kevin came to me and they said, 'Can you write us a song for our Easter concert at school?' And I thought to myself , what does a nice Jewish boy know about Easter. And I thought for a while, and this business about chocolate eggs laid by rabbits, there had to be some folklore attached to that. So this is the song that I put together for them."

Come all ye little children dear, come listen to my song
I'll sing for you an Easter tale, I will not keep you long
It's all about a little hen I head me mother say
This little hen laid chocolate eggs for resurrection day

But the hen she would not lay at home, but laid out in the field
The children came from miles around to find what she would yield
Their happy laugh and joyful song, you'd hear it everywhere
Oh there hadn't been a better time since last year at Polk Fair

But there's a little woman on the hill and she was very mean
'Cause children loved the little hen, with envy she turned green
She searched a book of evil spells and solemnly did swear
That she would change this little hen into a big white hare

But the little hen kept laying eggs, so many did she need
That when her feathers turned to fur, the change she did not heed
Her little heart was filled with love, and children they had fun
She didn't know she was a hare, or that evil had been done

The leprechauns they took her hand, they came from everywhere
King Brian brought his fairy host to see the big white hare
The little children stood around as Brian took the floor
Said he, "The hare is one of us and will live forever more."

So come all ye little children dear, pray list' to what I say
Remember when ye search for eggs on resurrection day
That love will always conquer hate, so be as free as air
And do what 'er you feel is right, like the hen that became a hare

"Well now, if ever you go out collecting eggs for Easter Sunday, you'll know for sure, and how they came to be. And why, in fact, rabbits lay chocolate eggs."
