Have done both...agree with McGrath. Have a basic idea of the song content/subject matter and try to get it done in one sentence. Worked in radio for a while and learned alot about pacing and timing. My 'offstage' thinking tends to be a little scattered so I have to focus on minimizing my patter onstage as I can easily digress. Was once told in reference to performing, "when in doubt less is more."
