A quick look at the CIA's Factbook suggests that the situation in Belgium is more complicated than Jack said. The two main legislative houses (there are six!) represent language communities, not regions. Incidentally, the region where (most of) the Walloons live is called Wallonia. Flemish is indeed close to German, but I believe it's even closer to Dutch--almost identical.
