"Fall" is grammatically correct. It's like "God bless you" (not "blesses") and "Hallowed be thy name" (not "is")--meaning "May God bless you" and "May thy name be hallowed." Moore's line means "May the sword of Erin fall avenging and bright." Grammar mavens will recognize this form as a subjunctive. |
