By the way, I was told (by Hamish, and others), that in the Glasgow of those times, a woman who had cod liver oil and orange juice was likely pregnant and on welfare. Others couldn't afford it. Hence the chorus. This, by the way, is a parody of the Christmas song "Virgin Mary Had a Little Baby". Was it Harry Belafonte? Somebody calypso. The tune is roughly the same.
