All plates carry the county name in Irish accross the Top. This was in response to a court case where a driver wished to have the county initials 'As Gaeilge' ie. he wanted to have the 'BAC' on his plate for Dublin (Baile Atha Cliath) as Irish is by constitution the first language of the state. He lost the case !
To appease - the new plates introduced were to carry the full name in Irish and the registration itself in English abbreviation
Irish solution - to Irish problem !
