Phillip BS: Unusual Street/Road Names (122* d) RE: BS: Unusual Street/Road Names 03 Jul 02

A couple of replies mention Slutwell Lane and Slutshole Road,I think it was, in England. There is also a Sluts Lane in East Anglia somewhere, which the residents wanted to change to something less insulting to them.

The "Slut" or "Sluts" part of these names is the dialect word slutch, which just means mud. So, Muddy Well Lane. Which sounds nicer really, doesn't it?

There is a hill over in the West Midlands called Stocking Hill. The owners of the house on the top of it called their house Stocking Top.
