Australian blue heelers are also considered blue. Calling a dog blue is a reference to its color, which is actually a grey that tends to appear slate-blue, perhaps more so in certain light situations. It's akin to saying a person has red hair--it's not technically red (save for some dye jobs), but it's reminiscent of the color and that's what it's called.
