It's definitely a good idea to have a good balanced mix of different types of singers and musicians in sessions and I think this mainly happens with a good MC. However one of the best session that I've been to is at Sidmouth Festival with the Middle Bar Singers. A twig gets passed round and if you want to sing you take it, if you don't you carry on passing it around. There's a driver who makes sure that the twig is passed around fairly.
