I think the best thing Michael Elphick did was the Private Schultz series. In my view it was the funniest programme on TV in the 1980s. No canned laughter was used, and the humour was as much in visual touches as in the script itself. I guess you could say the humour wasn't spotlit and packaged. You had to open yourself to it. Elphick's bemused, well-meaning German soldier was a strong mainstay for the comic situations and characters of the script. I recently wrote to the BBC to ask why the series was never repeated, and also to ask if there were any plans to put it on video. The reply just said there were no plans to rescreen it, or to bring out a video. Perhaps that will change now. The Schultz series also introduced me to the acting of Ian Richardson, who has gone on to become something of a British national favourite.
