Hi and thanks to everyone for the information about one lungers- I didn't mean to sound ignorant about them. actually, I live on a small island an hour north of Sydney and am involved in restoring old work boats including 'one lungers- or Kickers as we sometimes know them here. The 'Putt-Putt motors are wonderful old beasties. we have four main types Chapman and Blaxland engines are two strokers which are started by wrapping a leather belt around the exposed "bacon slicer" flywheel. Simplex engines are a simple matter of rolling the flywheel to TDc, a little thumb over the Amal updraft inlet to suck some fuel through, then gently roll the flywheel away from you- away you go. The rather more sporty Olds motors are still made in Queensland and are started by crank. I do love the exposed valve gear and conrod of the water pump going in and out at a very visible speed. We took a couple of the boats around to Ettalong a two weeks ago where we took part in a concourse d' elegance. there were several hundred beautiful old wooden boats taking part- what a day.
