Particularly common in Lancashire, where property was owned by the Stanley family, Earls of Derby - the family crest is an Eagle and Child. It relates to a family legend in which one of their offspring was stolen from his cradle by an eagle, but fortunately retrieved safely. Regards, Train Guard
