GUEST,masonoller@mcleodusa.net Ever hear of 'Old Charley'? (2) Ever hear of 'Old Charley'? 04 Feb 03

My Grandpa used to sing this to us when we was little kids. I've looked with the search engine to see where it came from and if there were any more lyrics to it, but had no luck finding it. Grandpa was from Kentucky and the song had a mountain sound. Here's what I remember of it:

Late in the evenin' the sun goin' down
You climb on Ol' Charley and ride into town

There at the hitch rail all night he will stand
While you in the grocery glass jug in hand

Early in the mornin' the sun is breakin' day
You climb on old Charley say carry me away

When you are sober you ride very well
You ride like a gentleman and all's fed well

But, when you drunk you heed none at all
You ride like the devil cussin' "Gawd damn it all"

Whenever Grandpa sang that last, part my Grandma would yell "Willie!!"
Then he would sing it again, ending with "Dag nabbit all". It's always been a favorite memory of mine. I would really like to learn the origins of this song and would appreciate any info about it or any song similiar that it may have sprung from.

Thanks in advance,
Mason Oller
