Does anyone have the complete lyrics for "The Old Oak Tree"? This is on the Boys of the Lough's 1st LP. The subject is a murder of a woman called Betsy by "Squire McCollum", who on being exposed as the murderer, commits suicide; as it names specific people I wonder if it is based on an actual murder? Here are the 1st and last verses (I think there are at least 7 other verses, from memory (I can remember bits of others), though as it is sung quickly it is not too long a song): Oh the night being dark, cold blew the wind And heavy fell the rain Young Betsy left her own dear home And came not back again Well they buried him just where he lay No Christian grave got he For no-one was found to bless the ground Beneath the old oak tree
