An octave mandola is a really nice compromise, giving the depth and fullness of tone that a bouzouki offers but just about manageable for melody picking. I reckon that a good octave mandola will outperform most bouzoukis. Costs are certainly NO more. Just keep your strings fresh to maintain a really good tonality across the range.
