I may be wrong but for Morris melodeons are comparitively new. Fiddles, pipe & Tabor and concertina were more commonly used in the past. I agree about massed ranks of melodeons being a bad thing (I play one myself), but I think massed anything playing for dance is bad. One or two musicians is the ideal.
