You might check out Baltimore Consort. They're an early music group who play with period instruments. Custer LaRue is their fabulous singer. She has her own ballads recordings too. Find them at www.baltcons.com.

I don't know if the content is what you want but the time period is appropriate. Other early music groups would probably be appropriate but I can't recommend other names because I don't know them.
