Cas - I note you asked a similar question back in 2001 after the battle of Bosworth and got similar replies with links to Alden and Cali in the US. If you are in the UK there are plenty of contacts but you need to say where you are for useful advice.

I would NOT advise a kit from Hobgoblin or (the same from the Bradford Early Music Shop) for a beginner. They do not work without a lot of fiddling and even then are only bottom end compared to what you can buy. If you really want one and are in the UK I might even be able to persuade my wife to sell you hers (lute back), which she does not use, if you are sufficently interested.

They are also available from time to time on e-Bay but buy with care. You really should buy with someone who knows about these things or you'll get my aforementioned wall ornament.
