When I saw your list, Beccy, I wondered why I ever gave away my copy of 'A Wrinkle in Time' by Madeleine L'Engle. I guess at the time I thought I had grown too old for it. What a great book! As a kid in the sixties it was great to read a book with a strong female lead character. It has an exciting plot which literally transports you to other worlds. It also has subtle messages about individuality and the power of the state. Another book I loved at the same time was 'Marianne Dreams'. I forget who it was by. It didn't influence my ideas as much as 'A Wrinkle in Time', it just had a cracking plot. Again it had a strong female lead character - that was a bit of a rarity back in the sixties. Anyone remember it and who wrote it? ShelleyC
