If you were trying to introduce someone to English folk, which album would you choose? The album should have a fine spread of artists, preferably including some 'proper' old folks such as Fred Jordan or the Coppers, and above all should have as many real classic 'core' English songs, such as 'Lovely Joan' and 'Through Bushes and Through Briars'. The arrangements should be 'straight' - the 'core' songs have become so well known that it's quite difficult, I think, to find simple un-jazzed up versions of them. There should be a good mix of genres, (ie, sea-songs, work songs, protest, love and plain happy songs). Any ideas?
