Yeah, well I looked at the NETMD forum and it confirms my suspicion that uploading is not an option, apparently by design and policy.

The analog link is the cheap way to do it, but there is a better, digital way. You need a MD deck (if you used MD seriously this is worth having in addition to a portable, for all sorts of reasons) with digital outputs, which most have. You also need a sound card with digital inputs. There are not so common but they exist. Either coax (RCA connectors) or optical, as long as you have the same at each end.

The difference is better sound quality and no possibility of overloading the sound card input, or of having the level too low and increasing the noise floor. I use this for producing CDs to sell. The downside it that it costs more for the gear to do it.
