This used happen to me before I invested in some decent backup options like Netsave etc.

You may have a CD or DVD on the same controller as your new drive and that would make winders very confused thinking it to be the cd!

Try setting the jumper to Slave, also make sure your ribbon cables and power cords are in good order. Power cords must all be replaced with a new power supply, the cables are separates.
