quidditas -- the essential "whatness" of something (Hamlet of Yorick: "Where be your quips and quiddities?"); related to the Scotist term "haeccitas", which is the essential "thingness" of something. I have always been big on Gerard Hopkins' word "inscape" -- the unique graininess of something that makes it what it is, unlike anything else in the world.
