When you record a track, make sure the 'Source' (double-click it) is set to your sound card's wave recording function, and 'Port' is set to wave playback.

If you don't get the wave/.wav device to select, go to the Options/Audio/General tab and click on the 'Wave Profiler' button at the bottom.

Hope this helps, but Cakewalk seems pretty complicated to me!
