Edith Fowke, in a postscript to Chap. 6, Chansons Franco-Ontariens, says of "Mon canot": "Many versions of this song have been collected throughout Canada....In the Canadian Folk Music Journal, 2(1974), 13-18, Francois Brassard [article titled "Le Voyageur"] traces it to three literary poems published in the 1860s."
