Thread Name: Icelandic Vikings In Mall of America....
Subject: RE: Icelandic Vikings In Mall of America....
The word "Vikings" is commonly used to describe the Scandinavian invaders of Ireland who founded the settlement, later city, of Dublin. Like most other invaders up until the time of Oliver Cromwell, these raiders were eventually wise enough to adjust to the idea of being Irish, and were soon assimilated (becoming "more Irish than the Irish themselves"*).

Back in the 1960s/70s, Icelandic Air was by far the cheapest way to get from the US to Europe, so many young Americans (hippie globetrotters, junior-year-abroad students, Rhodes scholars, etc) got at least a brief glimpse of Iceland during an airport stopover.

* This familar saying is translated from the Latin, which shows just how long ago visitors to Ireland started wanting to stay and fit into the local society. I can't remember the exact wording, but of course the Latin word "Hibernia" apears twice, in two different forms.

2d footnote: All due respect to Skarpi, I would have attempted to include the name of the capital city of Iceland, where the airport was/is located, but I can't spell it! Sounds like Rek-ya-vik.
