The best lights I saw were when I was in Maine in 1990, but I once saw them in Philadelphia! (Around 1962, I'm guessing.) Looked like a greenish-white circle with lines radiating out from it. Either that or the salt from my soft pretzel smeared on my glasses.

We don't see them in Hawaii, of course. But from my former house on the Big Island I could often see the North Star and the Southern Cross at the same time, just by turning around.
