Not sure if this is what you're driving at, but, yes, a lot of the people had background in playing gospel and related church music, and many of the singers had come up singing in church--that said, the musicians all had solid formal musical training, many with music degrees and pop/jazz background--and the string and horn background in "Motown Sound" was played by Detroit Symphony orchestra musicians--
