The news report I read said he was eighty one and had been suffering from organ failure and possibly Alzheimer's for some time. It was not a bad innings and he had a successful life. I enjoyed his films too. It struck me, that like Yul Brynner, he was probably a very different man in private life to the hard men he portrayed in films.
