Born Alice Nilson in 1924 in Kalmar, Sweden, Babs has been a film and TV star in Europe, touring for some years with a trio including Sven Asmussen. She had a UK hit in 1963 with After You've Gone, and recorded with Duke Ellington the same year, later singing in his Sacred Concerts, as well as at the 1975 Newport Jazz Festival. Ellington said 'Alice Babs is a composer's dream, for with her he can forget all the limitations and just write his heart out'. (Donald Clarke)
