I believe the Douglas Adams book is called "The Meaning of Lif". It gives new creative meanings to place names (of course they are all in the UK). I might get round to finding it one day when I unpack all my books.

I also invented some Australian ones a few years ago (the list is also lost somewhere in the bowels of the house). I am just trying to recall some of them:

Sydney - a position between sitting and kneeling
The Grampians - a condition suffered by old people early in the morning
Woolwich - what you get from wearing some types of jumpers
Mildura - those stubborn marks you can't get off bathroom tiles, also known as Greystanes
Forbes - a creeping feeling in the stomach from that curry you ate last night
