I always get irritated when people refer to a new song based on an old song as a parody, when as in this case it clearly isn't.

I'd probably call it that - "a new song based on an old song". I'd rarely be in so much off a hurry I'd need to use just one word for that. (And if it was a new word and you had to explain what it meant, you'd lose the time you saved anyway.)
