Subject: Mother's Wine Emporium
Hi, folks,

I went to RPI in Troy, NY Friday evening to attend a Scott Alarik concert at Mother's Wine Emporium, reputed to be the oldest college coffeehouse in the U.S. I was impressed to hear that they have been in operation for 30 years! What made me a little sad, though, is that, other than the staff members, precious few in the audience were young people. Mother's is a cozy place w/ small tables, complete w/ candles, drinks & snacks. I enjoyed the concert & picked up Scott's book on the folk music community. At both of Scott's concerts that I've attended, he's mentioned our Art Thieme--promoting his cd, singing a song he learned from him (Shoo-Ri) & re-telling his jokes (oh, my!). I went with my son, so at least we had 2 generations represented. Scott's vocal & instrumental work is very pleasant and his comments on the music are well-worth hearing. His written style far surpasses what one generally sees today. He has a cd,-30-, & his book, Deep Community, consists of interviews & commentary on folk music from his columns in the Boston Globe newspaper. I don't see an Internet site, but his email is Scalarik@aol.com.

best,
