"behind him...."

I don't think that abusiveness is ever really behind someone.... well, theoretically it is possible perhaps to do the work necessary to completely heal from the patterns that cause abuse, but IMO, in practical terms, it's like theoretical "recovery" from any addiction--- one can be a recovering abuser, but not a former abuser.
