I was in the hospital, having had my left big toenail removed because of a chronic infection. The anesthesia had worn off and it bloody well hurt.

In walks an aide of some sort and cheerily chirped, "And how are WE feeling today?"

I was sixteen at the time and I told her. She didn't care for it; I guess I was supposed to chirp right back that I felt like dancing out of there.

Or at work (the totality of real conversations):

"Do you know what time it is?"
"Yes."

"Can you run this copier?"
"Sure."

"I'm looking for a good book." (I work in a public library.)
"Well, you'll probably find one here."

"I'm looking for a good book."
"Why? You read everything we've got or what?"

"Can you recommend a good book?"
"Yes, but it's checked out. ALL the good books are checked out. You don't read bad books, do you? Neither does anyone. So all the good ones are checked out."
