My favorite Sci-fi novel of all time, by far, has got to be __EARTH ABIDES__ by George R. Stewart.

Also: __THE POWER__ by Frank M. Robinson Lippencott-1956). It's set in Chicago in those days and has some spectacular scenes around the city I grew up in like the old Riverview Amusement Park. A film version with Michael Rennie should've been a ton better than it was, and why they transposed it to California I'll never know.
