Never mind how long ago, Ohio University gave me a B.S. degree in Journalism. (I'm not kidding. That's what they award.) We were all going to be Woodward and Bernstein. The college paper even ran a self congratulatory editorial, "Woodstein U." Somewhere along the way, a lot of us traded our ideals for perks. There are all kinds of problems with journalists. Getting accurate coverage on a weekend is difficult, since reporters don't like working Saturdays or Sundays either. (Plan protests on weekdays. You'll get a smaller turnout, but better coverage.) Journalists would rather be clever than fair. They chase after celebrity gossip instead of real news. They pander to the worst in people. They push cheap sentiment, because it makes them look like heroes.
It's kind of a shame so many of us chucked our ideals.
