I remembered the second verse this afternoon. Glad somebody else did too. Woad is an antiseptic. There was an actual reason for painting yourself blue with the stuff, sort of like putting on the iodine before you get cut.
Incidentally, woad is dark blue, not the sky blue Mel Gibson's pseudo Celts wore in "Braveheart".
