Thanks Shelley. The trouble with most of the modern "scary movies" is that many of them depend on blood and guts to horrify rather than the sheer chilling effect obtained by the many of the black and white movies such as the first version of "The Haunting" and the great story lines of "The Dead of Night" and what about the 1942 film "The Cat People"? Many of those old films were able to scare by virtue of the fact that they dealt with the unknown or the occult. Very little blood as such was ever shed. I must mention the M.R. James stories which were brilliantly transferred to TV. Who for example will ever forget the ending of "Whistle and I'll Come to You"?
