Europe had a common language for centuries. Latin. It wasn't any harder than English, certainly its spelling made 100% more sense. And the news of the world is still being broadcast in it right here -- well, in Finland. Probably there are still more Latin speakers (or at least readers) than Finnish speakers, outside of Finland itself. I am pretty sure that the Vatican's radio station also has at least one Latin radio broadcast on its regular calendar.
