My favorite Art Carney performance was in a hardboiled detective story called "The Late Show" with Lily Tomlin. He got a chance to show off his complete range as a wiley, arthritic private eye whose toughness is equal to his humanity. I don't think he was even nominated for an Oscar for this role but he was poingent and believable. Does anyone remember that he starred in the Broadway stage version of The Odd Couple?
