The earthquake was almost 1400 miles from Anchorage and nearly 2000 miles from Juneau--closer to the former Soviet Union than to mainland Alaska--There are a lot of earthquakes out there--there have been 7 of a magnitude of 5 or greater so far today--if you check Current Earthquakes and associated sites, you'll discover many recent, large earthquakes, most of which you never heard about on the news--
Most of them happen in remote areas of the world and have little or no direct effect on anyone--which is why you don't hear about them, and it has only been relatively recently that we've been able to even measure and keep track of them--
