Because they were literally scriptus manus, and thus labor-intensive and costly to have. The mummy might have been the author, I suppose. Or a wealthy patron? I doubt anyone acting as critic could haver gotten a copy tucked up inside his mummy, except perhaps BY the author in a murderous fit of pique.
