Subject: RE: Origins: grateful dead and folk
Don't forget the Dead played about 45 folk songs in there repetoire over the years. They didn't just allude to them in there lyrics they played and adapted them to fit their style. They played I Know You Rider over 500 times live. They played traditional blues, country blues, appalachain music, jugband, and all sorts of folk stuff. There first single was a traditonal tune "Don't Ease Me In" and the B side was "Stealin' Stealin". I think a lot of the fans don't know how many of the songs are traditional.
Samson and Delilah, Deep Elem Blues, Dark Hollow, Cold Rain & Snow, The Ballad of Casey Jones, Whiskey in the Jar, Walkin' Blues, See See Rider, On the road again, Death Don't have no mercy, etc..
