The actual proof we did land and walk on the moon came, oddly enough, from an unmanned Soviet probe, the only one that the Russians ever landed safely on the moon, all others having crashed. This probe sampled both soil and air samples and picked up trace quantities of methane in the moon's limited atmosphere. This was not necessarily thought to be of human origins until spectrograph analysis showed it to be the results of Tang farts.
