Before I got into folk, I did a lot of caving and climbing (late 60s-70s) and it was beards then. Something to do with the mindset, though I didn't grow one to have the uniform. My daughter now 24 has seen me twice without a beard. First time she was about 5, burst into tears and wouldn't come near me until it grew back.
