Canadians claim precedence because they have been celebrating thanksgiving since 1578 when Martin Frobisher held a formal ceremony in Newfoundland to give thanks for surviving the long journey. But there must have been harvest festivals and rites of thanksgiving everywhere for as long as there have been harvests.
