London's Trafalgar Square has been minus one statue on a plinth for many years, in part due to a lack of funds, but also to a series of disagreements as to who should be honoured there. Recently, a new scheme has been underway: artists are being given 6 months use of the empty plinth in hopes that this will give Londoners a taste for making a final decision. The current place holder is a life sized statue of Jesus, who will be replaced in January by an postmodern upside down plinth on top of the existing plinth. Other statues and proposals are in the works. A recent discussion in the Evening Standard newspaper came up with a proposal by the famous 80 year old American harmonica player Larry Adler who resides in England. He has suggested erecting a statue of Moby Dick, which would then be labelled "The Plinth of Whales".
