Liam- thanks for starting a great thread. I, like you, have heard it "claimed" as of irish and scottish origin. Someone might someday find the "first published" version and stake a claim based on that, but that wouldn't necessarily establish origin. It's such a simple and singable melody that it probably crossed the straits on the first curragh and nearly instantaneously spread throught the islands.
