I seem to remember hearing that, for the same reasons of Establishment prejudice and exclusion, Friends ('Quakers') were excluded from the self-indulgent London banking fraternity ... so they started local (northern) cooperative banks for frugal non-conformists ... like Barclays. They also invested in the sort of endeavours unpopular with the London 'Flash Set' ... the coal mines and canals that were the foundation of the Industrial Revolution!
